For those who don't want a technical setup to backup their Mac, Time Machine is a. As soon as you do, macOS will show a dialog box requesting confirmation that you want to use that drive with Time Machine, and ask whether to encrypt the backup disk or not. When you choose Use as Backup Disk, Time Machine starts backing up all of your data. The process could take several hours, depending on the number of files and type of drive. Most Mac users rely on Apple's backup solution, Time Machine. As useful and generally reliable as it is, Time Machine doesn't support the essential '3-2-1' backup rule: to have three copies of your data — one in production and two copies — across two different types of media, with one copy stored offsite. If you erased your backup disk and began having trouble, reselecting it may fix the problem. After reselecting the backup disk and pointing it to the folder this fixed the issue. It took a few minutes for everything to work itself out but the system is backing up again. I found this solution here: OS X El Capitan: If Time Machine can't find.
